In 2020, when the pandemic forced all students into remote learning, Forestdale staff, birth parents, and foster parents became concerned about the effects of distance learning on our children. Data demonstrates that learning loss has been most significant for low-income, Black, and Hispanic students throughout the pandemic. This loss will translate into broader achievement gaps unless resource inequities are addressed. Already healing from trauma and disruption, the young people we work with are most in danger of becoming detached, losing their academic momentum, and dropping out. In response, Forestdale took action on three fronts:

  • Forestdale set up “Academy learning pods” on our Forest Hills campus to mitigate the negative impacts of remote learning. They worked in small groups of 3 or 4 students per instructor, receiving crucial educational support. heir families were particularly grateful since the children had been isolated in their homes 24 hours per day for months
  • After-school activities were made possible through grants that allowed families to enroll children in activities they would love! Stimulating their interests can be one of the best ways to re-engage students who have been disconnected by a period of remote learning.
  • Individualized assessment and planning, an initiative we are rolling out to all of the children in our prevention and foster care programs, will help each child succeed in school.

This incredibly important work is made possible by people who believe in academic equity and a brighter future for all NYC children. Join them by supporting our Annual Appeal today.
